Alfred Johnson

Alfred Johnson was born September 3, 1896 at Coxhoe, Co. Durham. His parents were EdwardJohnson and Gertrude Hutchinson. In the 1911 census the family were living at 67, Long Row, Coxhoe. They had been married 18 years and had five children, all living.

Alfred had attested January 26, 1914 in the Royal Field Artillery, Gunner 75629. Alfred was 18 years old. He was 5'6" tall, had a sallow complexion, grey eyes and brown hair.

July 18, 1914 Alfred was discharged from the army.

Alfred then enlisted in the Royal Navy, Stoker 7891S. He left West Hartlepool June 21, 1915. He arrived at Gibraltar December 28, 1915, then again April 1, 1916. He served on HMS Sappho July 31, 1916 till December 10, 1916. He then served on HMS Biarritz from December 31, 1916 till March 19, 1919 when he was demobilized.

Alfred Johnson is the grandfather of John Malcolm of Newton Aycliffe.
