Alfred Metcalfe was the grandfather of Martin Carter of Newton Aycliffe.

Alfred Metcalfe was born 1890 at Mile House, Firby, Bedale, North Yorkshire.

Parents: William Metcalfe, born Aiskew, Yorkshire and Eliza, born Yafforth, Yorkshire.

Alfred was baptized February 2, 1890 at St. Gregory's Church, Bedale. He was the youngest son.

In the 1911 census Alfred was working as a cowman at Aiskew Farm, Bedale.

Alfred attested December 9, 1915. He was 25 years 11 months old, working as a platelayer for N.E.R. He was living at 50, Alfred Street, Middlesbrough. He had married Alice Jones of Low Worsall, December 26, 1914.

Army number: 167837. Rank: Sapper. Unit: Royal Engineers.

Alfred served at home May 10, 1916 - December 12, 1916. He then joined the B.E.F. December 13, 1916.

Alfred had 3 children, Lavinia, born 1916, Kenneth Maurice, born 1919 and Delma, born 1921.

Alfred received his Protection CertificateFebruary 12, 1919.

Alfred returned to work on the railways at Bedale, but suffered ill health.

Alfred died at home in Emgate, Bedale March 27, 1956 and his wife in 1965.
