Ernest William Buckle

Ernest William Buckle was born in Eryholme, Yorkshire, in 1888. His parents were Alfred Buckle and Isabell Wake. In the 1901 census the family were living at Heighington. Alfred Buckle was a farmer and butcher, while Ernest was still at school.

By the 1911 census Ernest was a boarder at 2, Dixon Terrace, Darlington. He was working for N.E.R. as an Engineer Mechanical Iron Planer. He was 22 years old.

Army number: 4406 then 34997. Rank: Colour Sergeant. Unit: Durham Light Infantry then Yorkshire Light Infantry.

Ernest married Isabella Simpson Matson in 1916. Their son, Alfred William Buckle was baptized August 31, 1919.

Isabella was the daughter of William Matson, and Mary Ann Robinson (the daughter of Jarvis Robinson). The family were living at Heworth Cottage, Aycliffe in 1911. William Matson was a foreman drainer working for himself. His son, William Jervis Matson served in World War 1.
