George Dickinson was the son of Thomas and Louisa Dickinson of Ashton under Lyne, Lancashire. George was born 23 October, 1891 in 42, Queen Street, Ashton under Lyne. George worked as a cotton minder in one of the cotton mills in Ashton under Lyne. 20 December, 1911 George was a witness to the marriage of his older brother, Frederick Whitehead Dickinson to Esther Mills at St. Peter's Church, Ashton under Lyne. In December 1915 three sons of Thomas and Louisa Dickinson enlisted into the army. The family were living at 1, Athol Street, Ashton under Lyne. Frederick and George enlisted into the 9th Manchester Regiment and Stanley Dickinson enlisted 12 December, 1915 into the Army Service Corps (M T). He was a taxi driver, age 22 years 3 months. Stanley was mobilized 17 February, 1916. By 6 May, 1918 Stanley was discharged as no longer physically fit for war service. Stanley was 5'5" tall, fair complexion, light blue eyes, and had light brown hair. George Dickinson married Ethel Dean 16 November, 1916 at the Albion Congregational Church, Ashton under Lyne. One of the witnesses was S. Dickinson - maybe Stanley. Ethel was the daughter of John Herbert Dean and Charlotte Alice Hyde and lived at 16, Ashlynne, Ashton under Lyne when they married. Ethel was a cotton weaver. George Dickinson was in the 1/8th Manchester Regiment when he was killed 30 August, 1918. His name is on Panel 9 in the Vis en Artois Cemetery near Arras and he is remembered on the headstone of Ethel's parents in the churchyard at Leyland. George Dickinson was the first husband of the grandmother of Vivien Ellis of Newton Aycliffe. |
