George William Baker

1897 - 1991

George William Baker, Gunner 312280, served in the Royal Garrison Artillery, 269 Siege Battery. He enlisted at Tower Street Armoury, York in 1914.

George served at Blyth Shore Battery, Ypres in 1015, Egypt, Mesopotamia - along the Tigris to Bagdad and in India at the Governor's Residence in Simla (Shimla)

George returned home on the P&O RMS Kaiser-I-Hind (an Indian wind) to Plymouth in 1919.

In WW2 George served as a sergeant in the Home Guard at York.

He received the 1914 - 1918 Victory Medal and the 1939 - 1945 Defence Medal.

George was the father of David Baker of Aycliffe Village Local History Society.
