Herbert Wardle was the grandson of Edward Wardle and Mary Elizabeth Wilson of Evenwood. Herbert's uncle, John Alfred Wardle, served with the 1/6th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry. Herbert attested 12 August, 1915 at Darlington. He joined the 234 Field Coy, Royal Engineers, Sapper 131539. Herbert was 19 years 4 months old and was a coal miner. His address was 61, Lunds Bank, near Cockfield. Herbert was also a carpenter and was assessed as proficient. August 23, 1916, Herbert was named in the London Gazette as being awarded the Military Medal. July 31, 1917 Herbert was killed in action. September 3, 1921 Herbert's grandmother Mary received Herbert's Military Medal. |
