1. Marriage Register of the Parish of Grindon, County of Durham, transcribed by Bill Rounce, George Bell and Sandra Bell, on the GENUKI website. 2. Baptismal Register of the Parish of Grindon, County of Durham, as transcribed by Joyce Jackman in her letter of February 20, 1999 (Durham Record Office, MR 42/96). 3. This entry is not based on Joyce Jackman’s transcription, but is recorded in the International Genealogical Index. As Mrs. Jackman said that Thomas Thompson was the fourth son born to the couple, this record fills the gap. 4. Thomas is shown in the International Genealogical Index as having been baptized on December 28, 1801. Thomas and his brother John are the only Thompson children shown in the International Genealogical Index. James and Jane (Tait) Thompson Fourth Great-Grandparents James Thompson was a native of Sedgefield, England. He married Jane Tait (or Tate), a native of Aycliffe, in Grindon Parish on May 30, 1782.1 Aycliffe is located about four miles southwest of Sedgefield. They had at least six children, all of whom were baptized in the Parish of Grindon, County of Durham2: 1. Mary, baptized on September 2, 1785. 2. Ralph, baptized on September 14, 1788. 3. Thorp Thewles (now known as Thorp) is located about four miles southeast of Sedgefield.5 In 1801, the village had a population of 325.6 A Jane Thompson was buried in the St, James Churchyard on May 31, 1829, at the age of 69. A James Thompson was buried there on July 27, 1836, at the age of 92.7 If this is the same couple, James would have been about 38 and Jane 22 at the time of their marriage. None of the children appear to have been buried in this location. NOTES James and Jane (Tait) Thompson 2 5. In relation to Billingham, where Elizabeth married James Mellenby, Sedgefield is 7 miles northwest, Aycliffe is ten miles west and Thorp Thewles is three to four miles WNW. 6. GENUKI website. 7.
