John George Futter was born November 26, 1893 at Ferryhill, Co. Durham. John was the son of Alfred Futter, born in Norfolk, and Mary Ann Gray of Holmside, Durham. They had married in the Stockton area in 1880. In the 1891 census the family were living at Ferryhill and in the 1901and 1911 census were at 11, Dixon Street, Blackhill. John was still living with his parents and was working as an apprentice fitter in the Iron Works.

John became a sergeant, unit unknown.
