In the 1911 census John was 8 and a scholar living at 30, Albert Street, Shildon. His father, John Robert Dawson, was a miner from Guisborough and his mother was from Eldon Lane. John had two sisters, Lily, aged 11, and Jennie, aged 4, and a brother Thomas, aged 1.

John married Helen Wilson Faichen in 1933. They had a daughter, Audrey M Dawson, in 1937.
