John Walter Kent was born 28 February 1898 in Aycliffe and baptized 20 March, 1898. He was the brother of (James) Norman Kent and son of Thomas Kent and Mary Carrick. He was a clerk working for N.E.R. when he joined up, 178498 in the Machine Gun Corps. He was 18 years and 5 months old. His dispersal certificate is dated 11 January, 1920, North Camp, Ripon.

John Walter Kent married Mary Elizabeth Errington in 1925 and had a daughter in 1928. He was a member of the church choir and his daughter was organist for many years.
