Joseph Edwin Johnson was born July 22, 1894 at Coxhoe, Co. Durham. His parents were EdwardJohnson and Gertrude Hutchinson.

In the 1911 census the family were living at 67, Long Row, Coxhoe. They had been married 18 years and had five children, all living

Joseph is the older brother of Alfred Johnson.

Army number: 83474, then G15415. Rank: Private. Unit: Royal Field Artillery, then 2nd Battalion, Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment).

It is not known when he enlisted but he was awarded the 1915 Star for service in the Balkans.

Joseph was killed in action at the Battle of theSomme. He died July 3, 1916 and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Pier and Face 8C9A & 16A and on the Coxhoe War Memorial, Co. Durham.

Joseph Edwin Johnson is the great uncle of John Malcolm of Newton Aycliffe.
