Nicholas Lewis

Nicholas Lewis was born June 4, 1883 in Coundon Grange, Co. Durham. His parents were John Lewis, born Ireland, and Elizabeth Clarke, whose father Nicholas was born in Ireland.

John and Elizabeth Lewis had married September 20, 1882 at St. Wilfrid's Church, Bishop Auckland. They had another son, Robert, born 1894. Elizabeth probably died in 1884 as Nicholas and Robert are with their maternal grandparents in 1891 and 1901.

In the 1911 census Nicholas is living with his brother Robert, who now is married to Mary Jane Briddick from South Church. He was a labourer in the saw mills.

There is a medal card for a Nicholas Lewis, Private 23756, Northumberland Fusiliers. It states he had been discharged.

Nicholas had been gassed in the trenches and was fully pensioned from the army during the war.

Nicholas married Emma Milner in 1918.

Nicholas was found dead in the Hollywood bog area of Byers Green, reported in the Evening Despatch for Tuesday, April 21, 1925. A coroner's report found that his death was due to exposure accelerated by loss of blood from a wound on his face.

Nicholas Lewis is the great great grandfather of Euan Fitzgerald of Aycliffe.
