Robert Searle was born in 1900. He was the son of Thomas and Mary Searle of Ricknall Mill, Preston le Skerne. In the 1901 census there was a brother William, age 5, and a cousin, Thomas Searle, age 9, at the mill.

In the 1911 census there was also a sister Lucy, age 8.
