Walter Metcalfe

Walter Metcalfe was born 1900 in Darlington.

Parents: Edward Metcalfe of Richmond and Adelaide Dinsdale of Darlington.

Walter had 4 brothers and 3 sisters.

In the 1911 census the family were living at 45, Dickinson Street, Darlington. Edward Metcalfe was a plate edge planer working at Bridge Works, Darlington.

Attestation: July 17, 1917.

Army number: T.R./5/118038, then 85195. Rank: Private. Unit: 7th Reserve Battlion, West Yorkshire Regiment, then 1st/7th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry.

Walter was 18 years old and working as a labourer. He was 5' 2 1/4" tall. He lived at 15, Green Street, Darlin.gton.

Walter was called for training August 17, 1917 and posted to the 2nd Training Battalion, October 27, 1917. He was posted overseas April 2, 1918 and joined the Infantry Base Depot at Etaples. He then transferred to the Durham Light Infantry April 7, 1918 where he received his second number.

Walter was killed April 13, 1918 and is commemorated at Ploegsteert Memorial Berks Cemetery Extension, Ypres, Belgium.

Walter is the great uncle of Walter Metcalfe.
